Does this sign have a meaning to it?

Hi everyone!

Early Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Kwanzaa! (I'm Christian myself, but I don't want to leave anyone out)

Anyways, my husband and I want to make a sign especially for out little girl, so we don't have to spell out her name each time. He suggested signing beautiful but instead of our whole hand, just using the index and middle finger, like an "H" (her name is Hannah). I just want to make sure that doesn't mean anything already.

Also, what are using for your child's name? Any of you have special signs for him/her?

We don't sign names usually, we're still working on the basic signs. :-)

nope, there are nothing another meaning for that. My son's sign name is -- you just spell it "TJ". My hubby's sign name is -- "MJ" on left or right front below shoulder/chest. Mine - "M" on hand (not on palm hand) like "warning" sign, but say "M".

Let you know Im deaf, so thats how I know there are no another meaning of "H". :)

i haven't even tried teaching my 16 month old her name in sign. she knows 38 signs but not her name. she doesn't even respond to her name when she hears it. silly kid. :p

trying to teach my daughter the sign for chair and train, i've noticed she has a very hard time just putting out the index and middle finger, with the other 2 down. i just wanted to mention that it might be a difficult sign for a youngster to learn. mine doesn'thave that much dexterity in her fingers yet. but i really like the idea of signing beautiful with her name letter. cute!

Hehe! Your daughter is adorable!

Its okay if she doesn't know how to sign it... we just want her to know that we're talking to her in sign if we do that specific sign. My aunt is deaf, so it important for her (Hannah) to know its her sign.

u can do just about anything to use or make up a sign for your childs name.when i took sign language classes in middle school we all made up our own.
my name is Melissa and since I like horses we came up w/ using the sign for "M" at your temple (either hand/side).

Depends on how you're forming the sign, the sign for Hawaii sounds like it might be similar. Hawaii is signed by circling the H handshape infront of the face. Supposedly it's signed like that because people from Hawaii are beautiful.

yeah, but even if they are similar, I'm pretty sure that by using context, nobody would be confused.

Xan knows his name. He knows and responds to "Xan" and even "Xander."

But we still sign a sort of 'X' sign for his name, we cross our index fingers over each other. Since he can't say his name, even if he understands it, we figure that'll be better for him to communicate with us. :)

Great question!

My 14 month old son's name is Aiden-James but we all refer to him as Aiden. Last week, I found out that he is deaf. So for signing purposes we call him A.J., it is so much easier to sign. I know this may sound silly but sometimes I just sign "baby" for him or "baby" and then "boy.
I don't think that means anything but I am new to all this so don't take my word for it. By the way, how old is your daughter? She is adorable.
